Eddie Palmieri Shines at Library of Congress’ Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations

As part of the Library of Congress' monthlong Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, legendary Latin jazz pianist and multi-Grammy winner Eddie Palmieri will take center stage. From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, the Library is hosting a series of events that honor the contributions of Hispanic Americans, culminating in Palmieri’s highly anticipated performance on Oct. 18.

A Lifetime of Musical Innovation

Eddie Palmieri, whose career spans over six decades, has revolutionized jazz and salsa with his groundbreaking compositions. His 1965 hit, “Azúcar Pa’ Ti,” which was inducted into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2009, remains a defining moment in Latin music history. Known for blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms with jazz improvisation, Palmieri’s work embodies the vibrancy and depth of Hispanic culture.

Event Highlights

On Oct. 18, Palmieri will perform in the sold-out Coolidge Auditorium as part of the Concerts from the Library of Congress series. The evening will open with a short film titled Eddie Palmieri: Harlem River Drive, which explores the creative process behind his iconic album. This performance will be a fitting conclusion to a month filled with cultural events celebrating the contributions of Hispanic Americans.

More Hispanic Heritage Month Activities

The Library’s celebrations include poetry readings by renowned Latino poets, the addition of 50 audio recordings to the historic PALABRA Archive, and workshops for the public. Highlights include:

• Sept. 19: A poetry reading featuring former U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera and others in the Library’s Hispanic Reading Room.
• Sept. 27: The launch of a pilot University Leadership and Faculty Showcase, expanding awareness of Library resources and career opportunities.
• Family Day: Workshops on creating “cartoneros,” handmade books inspired by Latin American traditions.
