New York City will officially dedicate the intersection of East 112th Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan as Eddie Palmieri Way.

NEW YORK CITY — July 8, 2026
On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 1:00 PM, New York City will officially dedicate the intersection of East 112th Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan as Eddie Palmieri Way.
This public street-naming ceremony honors the life, music, and enduring cultural impact of Eddie Palmieri: the visionary pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and innovator whose work transformed Latin music, Latin jazz, and the sound of New York itself.
The designation of Eddie Palmieri Way was enacted by the New York City Council as part of Local Law 48 of 2026. The intersection stands in the city that shaped Eddie's earliest musical imagination and where his influence continues to be felt across generations of musicians, dancers, listeners, and cultural institutions.

A Legacy That Continues to Move
For more than seven decades, Eddie Palmieri pushed Afro-Caribbean music forward without compromise. From the trombone-driven sound of La Perfecta to landmark recordings including Azúcar Pa' Ti, Harlem River Drive, and The Sun of Latin Music, he created music that was rhythmic, political, sophisticated, communal, and impossible to contain within one category.
Eddie was the first Latino artist to win a GRAMMY Award and went on to receive eight GRAMMY Awards and two Latin GRAMMYs. His work earned him recognition as an NEA Jazz Master, a Latin Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and one of the essential architects of modern salsa and Latin jazz.
But Eddie's legacy cannot be reduced to awards. It lives in the piano players who learned to attack the rhythm, the dancers who found freedom in the clave, the bands who took risks with arrangement and sound, and the audiences around the world who recognized something powerful in his music.
Now, that legacy will have a permanent home in New York City.
